Very interesting turn of events tonight. First, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reported that the Reds and Ryan Madson had agreed to a deal. Then Reds.com said they hadn’t but now, with multiple sources confirming, it seems like its done. The deal, with $8.5 million guaranteed for 1 year with options, is a bit unexpected. Since the signings of Latos and Marshall, it seemed like the Reds’ next focus was on the closer role. For quite a while, it seemed like a Cordero deal was bound to happen. In the last few days, Kerry Wood’s name was getting thrown around. Now, out of left field (cough), Ryan Madson is inked.
While the price seems very steep, Madson has numbers to back up the money. Last season, he converted 32 of 34 saves and posted a 2.37 ERA. It really seems like this season is a go-for-broke year for the Reds. Fine with me.
